In the past few weeks I already tried to talk about “Semantic Web“, term that refers to the extension of the World Wide Web that enables people to share content beyond the boundaries of applications and websites. To be precise, I attempted a review of Kngine, a true semantic Web Search Engine.
After years of single ideas, a newer, holistic approach seems more useful.
Today I would like to present The Future Internet, an initiative driven by the European Union which brings together over 80 projects within six working groups, included into the general name of Service Web 3.0, to create a new Internet to meet Europe’s economic and social needs. The European Union has seen how emerging technologies such as the Semantic Web or Web Services transform the Internet from a network of information to a network of knowledge and services. Every physical object becomes an online addressable resource; a Mobile Internet where 24/7 seamless connectivity over multiple devices is the norm; and the need for semantics in order to meet the challenges presented by the dramatic increase in the scale of content and users.
This video should explain some future development of the Internet, though I dislike it a bit at a technical level.

Il Web Semantico è un termine coniato dall’inventore del Web, Tim Berners-Lee, con cui si definisce l’estensione del World Wide Web in modo da permettere alle persone di condividere contenuti aldilà dei limiti delle applicazioni fisiche e dei siti web. L’idea è che le pagine HTML, le immagini, i file siano associati ad informazioni e dati (metadati) che ne specifichino il contesto semantico in un formato adatto all’interrogazione, all’interpretazione e, più in generale, all’elaborazione automatica.
Come dunque tentare di ‘raccogliere’ e organizzare tutte le risorse presenti nella rete e poterle adoperare senza perdersi? Come potere sfruttare (pienamente) tutte le risorse e i servizi presenti? Non è meglio adoperare un “approccio olistico”, globale? Ecco che nell’Unione Europea attraverso l’iniziativa The Future Internet si fa strada l’idea del Web Semantico, di Service Web 3.0, un grande ‘calderone’ che raccoglie circa 80 progetti suddivisi in 6 macro-gruppi relativi ai nuovi linguaggi, servizi e altro che permettano ai cittadini europei di orientarsi ed essere pienamente cittadini, appunto.
