Steven Pinker is Harvard College Professor and Johnstone Family Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. Until 2003, he taught in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT. He conducts research on language and cognition, writes for publications such as the New York Times, Time, and The New Republic, and is the author of seven books, including The Language Instinct, How the Mind Works, Words and Rules, The Blank Slate, and most recently, The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature.
In the page WIP – Web Important People (see at the bottom) I posted a brief outline and video about Prof Pinker and The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature, best-selling 2002 book arguing against tabula rasa models of the social sciences. Pinker argues that human behaviour is substantially shaped by evolutionary psychological adaptations.

Steven Pinker mette sul banco degli imputati un’idea che, secondo lui, è diventata un vero pregiudizio che ha condizionato la ricerca scientifica e l’approfondimento del sapere dell’uomo. Non è vero, afferma l’autore, che gli uomini nascono con una mente ugualmente vuota e ricettiva, proprio come non è vero che tutto è acquisito e nulla innato. I più recenti studi dimostrano che esistono diverse conformazioni mentali, spesso comuni per sesso o razza. A 40-50 anni di distanza da Chomski, vale ancora la pena di dedicare qualche riflessione pedagogica all’argomento.
