This post was first originated from the reading of a very interesting and short article by the American teacher and colleague Larry Ferlazzo at his blog, Larry Ferlazzo Website of the Day.
Thus, today I would like to focus on Mapeas, a website that features a world map in which the latest news are displayed. These take the shape of markers over the corresponding countries, and a mere click is going to take you to the full story.
When visualizing this map, we should bear in mind that the newest items are the ones that have the biggest markers. The smaller the marker, then the older the story itself is on Mapeas. And if you are keen on an specific area (for example: “Entertainment”, “Business”, “Science”) note that you can always toggle only these markers on, but also report if the news are located mistakenly… Please note also that news can be presented also through short audio-video clips.
Mapeas works in conjunction with ClipSyndicate – that is why it can always present its visitors with the most recent news as featured on publishers such as Fox, the NBC, the ABC and the Associated Press. Mapeas could be a great resource for anyone that requires students to read global news stories. Students can locate stories by location which provides a geographic context for the stories they read.

Dedico questo post a un sito web chiamato Mapeas, a seguito della lettura di un breve scritto del collega insegnante americano Larry Ferlazzo, di cui invito a seguire il blog, Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day, appunto. Ecco: il mio post vuole sviluppare maggiore attenzione intorno a Mapeas.
Mapeas è un servizio interattivo – in inglese – tipico del Web 2.0 che visualizza e localizza tutte le notizie (anche con clip audio-video) su Google Maps. Le notizie di Mapeas sono suddivise per tipologia (Business, Entertainment, Science, Sport, per esempio) e “centrate” sulla mappa come fossero dei bersagli. Più la notizia è vecchia, più piccolo sarà il link sulla mappa e può essere presentata anche con clip audio-video (come nella foto a lato). Le notizie sono frutto della collaborazione con i colossi americani dell’informazione come Fox, NBC, ABC e l’Associated Press.
A livello di scuola Mapeas si presta per ottimi spunti didattici e ha grandi potenzialità didattiche: per esempio, sarebbe possibile avviare ricerche geografiche e sociali, localizzare eventi e fatti d’attualità, correlare varie fonti, ecc. L’effetto è assicurato, visto che basta passare col mouse sulla notizia per visualizzare un riquadro con i link utili, ma è possibile anche “correggere” la posizione geografica delle notizie stesse…
