The Open Library – a project of the Internet Archive – is an open semantic wiki that aggregates bibliographic metadata from world’s leading libraries and publishers that includes references to electronic book collections, physical libraries and booksellers. The goal of Open Library is to display a page on the web for every book ever published.
It is important to note that the Open Library is not a book store: they actually do not have any physical or electronic books. With the Open Library it is possible to edit the description obtained: when you are looking at a book’s page, click the edit button within the description section and make your desired edit. Moreover, Open Library cannot tell you how much your book is worth. If a book is for sale somewhere, Open Library will display links to the various booksellers who have it available under the “BUY” heading on the right-hand side of the book’s page.

Oggi ho scoperto Open Library, che NON è un negozio di libri elettronici. Nel’inizio di 2007, l’Internet Archive ha riunito un gruppo di persone a San Francisco per discutere la possibilità della realizzazione della biblioteca aperta. Tutto questo sforzo di Open Library è collegato al progetto di digitalizzazione dell’Internet Archive, in modo da potere anche leggere i libri online che sono disponibile in archivio.
Detto in breve, Open Library è un wiki semantico aperto, che aggrega metadati bibliografici dalle più importanti biblioteche mondiali e anche dagli editori, inclusi i riferimenti a collezioni di libri elettronici, biblioteche fisiche esistenti e librai (rivenditori veri e propri). E’ da sottolineare ancora con forza che Open Library NON presenta recensioni sui libri presenti, NE’ è un negozio elettronico, semmai vi rimanda a un negozio qualora il testo in esame sia disponibile presso qualche rivenditore attraverso l’icona “BUY” (“Compra”). Open Library anticipa anche che a breve vi sarà la possibilità di stampare le schede su richiesta e anche di richiedere la digitalizzazione di un libro specifico trovato nello schedario della biblioteca, particolarmente per rendere accessibile libri fuori copyright e difficili a trovare.
